God Cares for Us
GOD CARES FOR US!
Today, we begin our Fall 2018 message & growth group series called “Learning to Enjoy God,” based on the life of Moses in Exodus. We learn to enjoy God when we discover that God cares for us. His care is evident in the birth & early adult life of Moses. What truths in Moses’ life teach us about the God whom we can enjoy?
I. GOD CARRIES US, WHEN WE FEEL FORSAKEN (2:1-10)
God carried Moses’ parents (Amram & Jochebed [6:20]), when they forsook the king’s order to kill their baby boy (2:1-2). God carried Moses, when he was put in a basket (2:3a), brought to the Nile (2:3b), & was providentially picked up by Pharaoh’s daughter (2:5-6). God carried Moses’ sister (Miriam; cf. 15:20), when she watched what would happen to her brother in the Nile (2:4), & when she proposed that a Hebrew woman nurse the baby Moses (2:7-9). God carried Pharaoh’s daughter,
when she saw Moses (1:5-6), & decided to take him as her son (1:10a). Moses’ name (i.e., “draw out” of the water, 2:10b) reminds us that God is in control. Let’s remember: God carries us all the way!
II. GOD CLINGS TO US, WHEN WE FALL & FAIL (2:11-22)
God clung to Moses, when Moses grew up in Pharaoh’s court (2:11a; cf. Heb. 11:24). God clung to Moses, when Moses murdered an Egyptian in defense of a Hebrew (2:11b-12; Heb. 11:25). God clung to Moses, when Moses fled out of Egypt (2:13-15a). God clung to Moses, when Moses
went to, married in, & had a son in Midian (1:15b-22). His son’s name, “Gershom” (i.e., “alien here”; 2:22) is a reminder to Moses that God clung to him, even when he was a foreigner. Let’s remember: God clings to us no matter what!
III. GOD CARES FOR US, WHEN WE’RE FAR & FEARFUL (2:23-25)
God cared for Israel, when the people were slaves for 40 more years (2:23). God cared, when they cried for help & groaned in despair (2:24). God cared, when He looked at them with concern (2:25). Just as God cared for Moses in Midian for 40 years under oblivion, so God cared for Israel for 40 years in Egypt under oppression. Let’s remember: God cares for us against all odds!
In God We Trust
IN GOD WE TRUST
In life, we will face uncertainties that will put fear in our hearts. As Christians, we must always trust God. It is normal to feel afraid in the midst of difficult situations but be confident that God calms our fears.
I. We Doubt His Plan
Verse: 11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
- God Assures us of His Presence
Verse: 12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
II. We Disregard His Purpose
Verse: 13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”
- God Announces His Power
Verse: 14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”
III. We Deny His Process
Verse: Exodus 4: 1 “Then Moses answered, “But behold, they will not believe me or listen to my voice, for they will say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you.’”
- God Affirms us of His Promises
Verse: 17 And I have promised to bring you up out of your misery in Egypt into the land flowing with milk and honey.’
God Calms our Fears
With Moses’ life as our guideline we can see that God reveals Himself to His people through the different seasons in life. Whatever it is that we’re going through, let’s always point to God’s glory and grace.
I. God Directs us to His Presence
Verse: 5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”
II. God Displays His Power
Verse: 6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.
III. God Delivers His Promises
Verse: “8 so I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey”
